There's not much that works better to beat the heat than a free show at Toronto's balmy Harbourfront stage. After previous flirtations with the likes of Final Fantasy and Hawksley Workman, the HF organizers decided to take things in an electronic direction this year, with Liverpool's Ladytron leading the charge.
Visibility was problematic (and it usually is at Harbourfront, unless you're one of the incredibly-tall). Why people feel the need to stand when there are chairs behind them is one of life's unsolvable mysteries. If everyone would simply sit down, everyone would be able to see. It's up to you front row people - you have to start it.
What could be seen of Ladytron, was an immensely enjoyable spectacle. The sound was dead-on (though somewhat muted by the open air) and their light show was far beyond anything the HB Fest has presented in the past. Highlight of the set was their hit "Seventeen," which included enormous panel lights flashing the numbers 17 and 21 in time with the song's lyrics. It was a dark and powerful night - one that likely gave a few kids nightmares - and will be tough to top in 2009.
