Wolf Parade
Kool Haus
August 9, 2008

I've been listening to Wolf Parade for about three years and I still don't think I have them figured out. Like Radiohead, these guys require an enormous investment of time before some sort of artist/listener communion can occur.

If judging by the ecstatic fans that turn up at their shows, one has to assume there's a payoff at the potential core of spent hours. It wasn't a complete sell-out at the Kool Haus but it was close and there was no way anyone aside from the die-hards was getting near the stage.

One thing that's evident from even a surface exploration of these Montrealers is that their live show is a very different animal than their on-disc persona; the songs come to life in a way they never will on headphones, often meandering (in an ear-splitting, danceable way) several minutes past their on-record ending points. Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner are both natural-born frontmen and the resulting dueling vocal aesthetic really takes the Wolf Parade stage act to a level that isn't reached by many Canadian bands.

They played seemingly the entire night, hitting nearly every song from their newest, At Mount Zoomer, and still managing to haul out fan favourites from Apologies to the Queen Mary and their self-titled EP.

(4.5/5)
