Nothing beats a free Tuesday night concert at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, especially when the lads that run the Edge New Music Night have gotten their hands on some decent bands. Brit up-and-comers Los Campesinos! were in town to headline, with Toronto's Germans opening.
Germans came up with an impressive disc this year in Cape Fear, but it would seem their irreverant indie rock doesn't translate well to the stage. Album tracks weren't very recognizable in a live setting and songs often degenerated into what can only be described as heavy metal rock-outs. It was also evident that they front loaded their set with the catchiest songs in their repetoire, as the latter half of their show was almost forgettable. Get the disc, for sure, but avoid the stage show.
It's a safe bet that when upstart Toronto label Arts & Crafts signs an overseas band, they've discovered something pretty special. Formed only a short time ago at Cardiff University, Los Campesinos! are already so cohesive a group that it's a little embarassing to other bands. They're full of youthful energy on stage as well as on disc and while they're a little inexperienced in a live setting, they more than make up for it in charm.
If there are any awards given out in 2007 for best song titles, this seven-piece should definitely be in the running, having penned instant classics (and crowd favourites) "We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives," "You! Me! Dancing!" and "Don't Tell Me To Do The Math(s)."
Given a little time to develop, these youngsters will take over the world.
