Immaculate Machine
Horseshoe Tavern
August 1, 2007

Kathryn Calder has it made in the shade these days. Not only is she a third of one of the country's current top indie pop acts, Immaculate Machine, she's also one eighth of arguably the country's pinnacle pop purveyors, The New Pornographers. (That's a mouthful).

Rubbing shoulders with Neko Case, Dan Bejar and Carl Newman seems to have had an effect on the Machine, as their latest disc, Fables, has a decidedly slower pace than their debut, Ones And Zeros. Though the trio's pop sensibilities have been refined between albums, their lifeblood is in their hooks, which have thankfully remained intact.

The Horseshoe was surprisingly empty on this night, considering the infrequency of IM's Toronto visits, as well as the fact that their disc had been riding the top of the campus charts for several weeks. It didn't seem to deter the Machine though; they were happy that anyone came out to see them and responded with a classy but energetic set that picked from the best tracks across their two discs (and included an interesting half-French rendition of "Broken Ship" that the crowd seemed to go for).

An excellent way to spend a Wednesday night.
