Cheers to ubiquitous Canadians Hawksley Workman and The Stills for playing a free bash at Toronto's spacious Harbourfront. Jeers to Harbourfront management for deciding to limit the performance to 90 decibels in an effort to placate the residents on Toronto Island. What good does a rock show produce when no one can hear the guitars? What use is Hawksley Workman if no one past the tenth row can hear him singing?
The Stills tried their best in spite of obvious limitations, but half way through Workman's set I felt the need to return home and put on his debut CD, For Him And The Girls.

Workman opened his Monday night set with the now-classic "Maniacs," but he didn't really have a choice, as it's the first song on the aforementioned record. Thankfully, he decided not to waver from his break-through disc on this night, as everything he's made since that album is shit. It's startling to think that a musician could show such creativity and promise at the beginning of a career, then spiral downwards into a pit of MTV-friendly love-drivel. Regardless of his recent efforts, Workman still has the best voice in Canadian music.
