Weewerk may be the perennial underdog of record labels, but they host some damn fine artists and usually find an excuse to have them all play on the same night. This time around it was CD release night for both the Two-Minute Miracles and Barmitzvah Brothers, with Ox along to get the party started.
They have an oddly large number of songs about cars, and likewise about California, but Ox really is deserving of a spot at the forefront of Canadian country music. They're one of those rare backwater bands whose stuff is beloved by indie folk but would also seem right at home on CMT. They really do need to update their set list though... how about a new album fellas?
While the Barmitzvah Brothers are usually a ton of fun on stage, their choice to focus entirely on songs from their new job-themed album left the crowd a little disinterested. If you're a die-hard BB fan, consider this a time to take a break from stalking the band and make your return when their next album is ready.
As usual, TMM frontman Andy Magoffin looked like a hobo, but also as usual, he and his band put on an admirable show, focusing on tunes from his latest, The Lions Of Love. There may not be a better song in his collection than album opener, "The Minus Ball" and with Jenny Mitchell singing backup on a few tracks, the TMM live act has taken on a fresh new feel.
