There aren't a lot of bands that use a smoke machine effectively. Most turn one on without much thought to its effects - it's just a cool thing to have - but the smoke actually seems pertinent in Young Galaxy's case.
To say that their sound is "big" would be a bit of an understatement. The Young Galaxy experience is cosmic - almost other-worldly. The songs were a bang-on match to their album and the band members posessed a sort of cool aloofness that made the whole experience seem like it was taking place in slow motion. If anyone in the audience was high, they must have the night of their lives.
Writers have been saying for the last year that YG amassed most of their following before they had put a single track to disc and the reason is now evident. These kids should not be openers.
Besnard Lakes put on an adequate performance but it was pale by comparison. While their disc was certainly worthy of a Polaris nomination, their stage show doesn't do much to put them ahead of the multitude of other acts currently inhabiting the so-called world of indie rock. Singer/guitarist Jace Lasek really is a sight to behold though - a true blast from the past.
