Magnolia Electric Co.
Lee's Palace
October 5, 2007

No songwriter/musician performing today is more prolific than Magnolia Electric Co.'s Jason Molina, period. He's been making albums under various monikers at a pace of one or more a year for over a decade and, after recently releasing a 4-disc MEC box set, he announced he's got another eight albums, ready to go.

The sheer size of the MEC catalogue, combined with the fact that Molina and company hit Toronto at least twice a year, means no one in attendance really cares much what the band plays (though shouts of "Farewell Transmission!" inevitably appear by mid-set). Every song is good enough for a live treatment and as usual, on this night, they played to a near sell-out crowd.

It has to be said that Molina's new moustache and cowboy hat look is a little ridiculous (think Snoopy's cousin Spike), but it didn't detract from a typically solid set. His voice was spot-on, that frizzy-haired guitarist (best in the business, possibly) was his usual frantic self and trucker hats were plentiful in the crowd. It's one thing to say you've got eight albums ready to go; it's another to know that you can release them all and they'll all be bought.
