Rock Plaza Central
Tranzac
June 30, 2007

Leave it to a kooky collective of Torontonians to create a concept album about a group of robotic horses trapped in the midst of an identity crisis while they travel home after joining humans in their war against the angels.

It's hard to tell whether or not Rock Plaza Central's Are We Not Horses album is full of buried metaphor or is just a case of anthropomorphic fiction, but the key to enjoying a Plaza live show, is to set aside any judgments you might have about the subject matter.

The Tranzac was a rather kitschy concert venue, but its pluses included wheat beer and a definite lack of crowd. The sound system had only a fraction of the power of a regular Toronto club, but it didn't seem to bother RPC as they revelled in the ability to chat with the attendees and even sent some of them on beer runs.

The septet put on another one of their usually solid shows, though their booze-fuelled cavorting tended to make things a little sloppy towards the ends of songs. The highlight of the night came when the drummer tossed half of his kit towards the front of the stage, and the violinist borrowed a drumstick and continued to play it for him. RPC played a few older songs in addition to their Horse fair and from the stunningly good tracks they chose, it seems only a matter of time before the masses discover their back catalogue.
